The inactivity itself brings its own concerns, too. Long idle periods can leave brakes seized, tyres flat-spotted, and fluids degraded.

Low mileage is not always a good sign

Low mileage is usually taken as a positive sign, on the assumption that fewer miles mean less wear and tear. In many cases, that's a fair assumption. But it isn't a universal one.

When a car sits idle for long stretches, age-related deterioration starts to take over from use-related wear. Rubber seals and hoses perish, tyres crack and develop flat spots, fluids degrade, batteries die, and brake callipers can seize. Short-trip use brings its own problems, since the engine rarely reaches operating temperature, leaving moisture and acids in the oil and sludge building up over time.

The lower end reflects the latest Department for Transport figure (7,100 miles per car in 2024), while the upper end matches the long-standing trade rule of thumb.
