Legal status check

What is the Legal status check section in a vehicle history report?

The Legal status check section in a carVertical report provides information on legal issues associated with the vehicle. This may include information such as whether the vehicle has passed or failed technical inspection, its designation as “scrapped,” its insurance status, and import information (if available).

What you can learn from the Legal status check section

If any issues are found in the vehicle’s legal status, a yellow warning sign will appear in the Legal status check card at the top of the report.

In this section, you can find details on whether the vehicle:

  • Has passed technical inspections. Vehicles that have not passed may need repairs or modifications before they can be legally driven.
  • Is marked as “scrapped,” meaning that it’s designated for dismantling and isn’t legally allowed on the road. This status can affect resale and eligibility for registration.
  • Is currently insured, or if the coverage has expired and hasn’t been renewed (including the expiration date).
  • Was imported or exported, which could mean specific compliance requirements (e.g., extra inspections or certifications for roadworthiness).

Each record contains an event type, its status (Record found, No record found, Passed [technical inspection]), the date and country where the event was recorded, and a short explanation.

Insurance status check

The Insurance tile in the Legal status check section lets you see whether a car is currently insured and view coverage validity dates. Beyond legal risks, a lack of insurance may also indicate potential issues — such as registration problems or unresolved damage — so it’s important to check this before buying a car.

If the car isn’t currently insured, you will see a yellow warning icon along with the date of the last recorded policy, if available.

Note: If you don’t find any insurance information, that doesn’t necessarily mean the car is uninsured. It simply means we couldn’t find the record in our partner databases, and it’s worth asking the seller directly.

Financial restrictions

Depending on data availability, this section may also include information related to a car’s financial restrictions. If any records are available, this section will appear in your report as Financial and legal status check.

The Financial restrictions part of this section may include information about:

  • Lease – indicates that the car is currently leased, which may affect ownership transfer.
  • Operating lease – shows that the car is under an operating lease agreement, often used for business or fleet vehicles. This type of contract allows the use of the car but does not grant ownership rights.
  • Linked to a dealer loan? This card refers to financing used by dealerships to stock vehicles, which may limit an individual’s ability to purchase or register the car independently.

Registration restrictions

Just like the financial restrictions, this section may also show registration restrictions when such data is available. In this case, this section will appear in your report as Registration and legal status check.

The Registration restrictions part of this section may include information about:

  • Lien – this record refers to financial obligations attached to the vehicle. If a lien exists, the lender may have the legal right to repossess the car if the debt is not paid.
  • Seizures – this entry shows that the vehicle has been seized by authorities, often due to legal actions such as unpaid debts, criminal investigations, or other legal disputes. A seized vehicle may not be eligible for registration or transfer until the issue is resolved.
  • Property rights – this entry indicates that the legal ownership of the vehicle belongs to someone other than the seller. It may mean that the car is legally tied to a third party, such as a previous owner or a lender.

Why may this section be incomplete?

The information included in the report depends on the availability of data. If any of the information listed above is missing from the Legal status check section, it means that no matching records were found in the official databases, or that the vehicle has no restrictions.

Why is legal status important when buying a used car?

The legal status provides assurance that a used car can be driven on public roads and complies with current regulations. To avoid legal, safety, and registration issues, it is essential to check whether the car has passed technical inspections, avoid vehicles that have been “scrapped,” and ensure that the vehicle has completed all import/export procedures.
