From the moment it left the dealership, our Caravelle didn’t slow down. In just 2 years, it had already covered 89,000 kilometers – and that was only the beginning. As the years passed, it just kept going.

The van spent most of its time driving in Austria. However, in 2023, it was registered in France, and the next year, it arrived at its final destination – Romania.

While still in Austria, in 2022, the Caravelle reached an eye-watering 814,426 km on the odometer, which is roughly 20 times around the globe. Astonishing numbers for a vehicle – it would make any car manufacturer proud.

Sadly, this is exactly when the magic begins. 

By the time the Caravelle is registered in Romania, the odometer shows just 174,399 km. That means over 640,000 km have simply vanished

 – wiped clean, gone without a trace. And no, this isn’t some exaggerated marketing stunt. It’s a real car with a real report.

We can only imagine how worn some components of a car, which has driven more than 800,000 km, could be.

Understand the import regulations for Norway

Before deciding to import a car to Norway, it’s important to understand the local regulations. Whether the car comes from an EU/EEA country or a non-EU country, its age, engine type, and emissions class will affect the registration tax, required documentation, and mandatory inspections. Cars from outside the EU may need individual approval, while EU/EEA vehicles with type approval usually have a simpler registration process.

When importing a car, you’ll likely have to deal with several types of taxes and fees:

 In Norway, VAT is 25% on the import of most vehicles. It applies whether the car is new or used. Special rules exist for very old or classic cars, but generally, imported vehicles are subject to full VAT.

 Cars imported from EU/EEA countries are exempt from customs duties, but vehicles from outside the EU will usually be charged customs fees (typically around 10%) depending on the country of origin.

 Many European countries impose extra registration or environmental fees. In Norway, there is a registration tax (registreringsavgift) based on weight, CO₂ emissions, NOx, and energy efficiency. EVs and hybrid vehicles have lower or reduced rates, while older, high-emission vehicles are taxed higher.

 Always check these details on official government websites or by contacting customs authorities. Different vehicle categories, like commercial vs. passenger, electric vs. combustion, and so on, might follow different procedures or rates.

Easier importing requires having all the correct paperwork. In general, you will need:

In Norway, all imported vehicles must pass a Norwegian vehicle inspection (EU-kontroll) or obtain an individual approval if the car does not have EU type approval. The inspection ensures the car meets Norwegian safety and environmental standards, covering aspects such as roadworthiness, brakes, lights, structural integrity, emissions, and other safety equipment. 

For electric vehicles, additional checks may include compliance of the battery and electric systems. Completing these inspections is mandatory before the vehicle can be registered and legally driven in Norway.

Distance within Europe can also influence costs. For example, shipping from southern or eastern Europe is typically more expensive than from neighboring Nordic countries.

Finally, you’ll need to register the imported car in your home country. This typically involves:

 Including the invoice or proof of purchase, original registration certificate, and a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for EU/EEA vehicles. Cars from outside the EU/EEA require individual approval instead of a CoC. Additionally, an inspection certificate (EU-kontroll or individual approval) may be required to confirm the vehicle meets Norwegian technical and safety standards.

On a car, the VIN is typically located in several areas, but a few of the most common ones are: 

 – almost all modern cars have a VIN plate on the driver’s side of the dashboard, which is visible through the windshield from the outside.

 – you may find a VIN plate under the hood, next to its latch.

 – accessible via the wheel well; you’re more likely to find the VIN there on older cars.

 – some cars have a VIN plate on the inner side of a driver’s side door pillar.

 – you may find a VIN number under the trunk lining, next to the spare wheel.

Locating the VIN number is especially important when 

. Look for these plates in different locations and make sure the numbers match. If they don’t, consider it a huge red flag – you may even be looking at a stolen car!

Where can I find a VIN number on a motorcycle?

It’s not just cars that have VIN numbers – other motor vehicles, including motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, RVs, and other vehicle types, also have them.

Like with cars, manufacturers usually put the motorcycle VIN on irreplaceable parts, but the exact location may differ between makers and models. Typically, you will find the motorcycle VIN:

 – inspect the structure that holds the handlebar.

 – try the rail that holds the front wheel.

You may also check a motorcycle’s registration and insurance documents – these will usually also include the VIN. Make sure the numbers match.

Various registries and institutions collect vehicle data, which is accessible using a VIN number. Some countries also have local databases (Statens vegvesen in Norway) for drivers to get a brief car history with the VIN or license plate number.

The first VIN numbers were used in the 1950s, but the format varied by manufacturer, making vehicles more challenging to identify. 

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) standardized the current VIN format in 1981. As a result, almost every vehicle made after 1981 has a unique 17-character identification code that must be placed on each vehicle.

Every character in the vehicle identification number represents particular information about a vehicle. The whole number can be divided into 4 sections for easier navigation:

 The world manufacturer identifier section contains 3 characters showing where a vehicle was built and its manufacturer. 

 The vehicle descriptor section reveals a vehicle’s brand, body style, and engine size.

 This is a vehicle security code known as a check digit. It’s calculated by putting all the other VIN digits into a mathematical formula.

 The vehicle identifier section contains 8 characters, 2 of which show the model year and an assembly plant code, while the last 6 numbers contain the serial code of a vehicle.

Each specification, assembly plant, manufacturer, and other properties have corresponding characters in a VIN number, so you have to decode a VIN to reveal its information. A simple VIN decoder can do that for you in a few seconds.

 Bear in mind that 17-character Vehicle Identification Numbers don’t have O(o), I(i), and Q(q) letters to avoid confusion with 0, 1, and 9.
